The Meaning of ``Skokomish``Bruce Miller is a noted artist, ceremonial leader and teacher from the Skokomish Nation near Shelton. Originally the name “Skokomish” referred to a community of Twana speaking people who lived along the Skokomish River and its north fork. In translation Skokomish means “people of the big river”. The Skokomish were one of at least nine separate tuwaduq speaking villages who collectively called themselves tuwaduq, which has been anglicized to Twana. https://www.skokedu.org/Twana/
To the Skokomish, “People of the River”, their language, tuwaduq is sacred and a true historical preserve of their cultural way of life, lessons, and teachings for future generations.
